In 1821, Fr. Andre Coindre found two young orphans huddled in a doorway outside a church in Lyons, France. Worried for their safety and their future, he took them in. That compassionate response ultimately led to the foundation of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. In a time when corporal punishment was the norm, Fr. Coindre believed that all children were worthwhile and lovable. He believed with the proper correction and a focus on the formation of the whole child, these children (who others had given up on) would be able to reach their fullest potential. One hundred and eighty seven years later and the mission is still the same.
To rescue the children from ignorance, to prepare them for life and to give them a knowledge and love of religion.
Preamble, Rule of Life
Bishop Guertin’s many programs build on those three areas, academically and personally. We encourage our students to respond to ignorance of all types, to be tolerant, hopeful, trustworthy, and knowledgeable. Not only do we prepare our students for college, but even more so, to be the best person they can be in that setting and beyond. True to the tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, our students are provided opportunities through class-work, retreats, community service and liturgies to deepen their faith experience.
A Bishop Guertin diploma carries both a responsibility and a challenge. We challenge our graduates to remain life-long learners and positive participants in their world. A Bishop Guertin graduate is charged with the responsibility to be more sensitive to the needs and concerns of others, to be more service-oriented and to be more thoughtful about their faith. Students at Bishop Guertin catch a spirit, a positive attitude that they carry with them throughout their lives.
We do not always have words for what we accomplish but you can see it in our student body and in the alumni of our school community who continue to make a difference in the world around us.
