Three-Kend! BG Teams Win 3 State Titles

It was a tremendous weekend for Bishop Guertin Athletics on March 11-12.

Over the course of Saturday and Sunday, Cardinal teams claimed three NHIAA Division I State Championships. The girls hockey team kicked off the weekend by beating Oyster River/Portsmouth, 3-2, at the SNHU Arena in Manchester thanks to a pair of goals from senior Jill Scanlon and a strong defensive performance from the entire team. For the girls team, it marked the second title in three seasons and the second in program history (2021).

The boys hockey team followed suit in the next game at SNHU Arena by taking down Bedford, 4-3, in overtime in one of the most dramatic finals ever. After trailing 3-1, the Bulldogs fought back to tie the game in the final minute and send the contest to the extra period. It was there that a penalty on a breakaway gave senior Logan Vogel a penalty shot attempt that he buried on the backhand for the program’s seventh state title and first since 2015. Senior and team captain John Mantone had a hat trick as he scored all three regulation goals.

Capping the weekend was the girls basketball team pulling off a memorable comeback win against Bedford at UNH’s Lundholm Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. Down by 10 heading into the fourth quarter, the Cardinals fought back, using a 23-7 scoring edge in the period for a 51-45 victory. Senior Brooke Paquette stepped up big in her final game in a BG uniform, scoring 24 points, as Bishop Guertin won its second straight and eighth state title since 2012, finishing the season with a perfect 21-0 record.

The three-title weekend has been dubbed a ‘three-kend.’
